PowerBack 50kVA Multi-Home Temporary Power Restoration Device
The PowerBack 50kVA Multi-Home is a high-capacity temporary power restoration device built for restoring service to multiple customers when an underground secondary cable fails. It provides a quick, convenient source of 240 volt power for multi-home services from one phase and a good neutral — or 120V service from two good phases (restoring neutral).
Designed for apartment buildings, condominiums, secondary pedestals, and pad-mount feeds, the PowerBack 50kVA restores balanced 120/240V power downstream of a failed and isolated cable in minutes instead of hours. Unlike 15–30kVA PowerBack models, it does not use a meter adapter. It lands three individual conductors on the utility secondary through a Cam-Lok disconnect kit.

Why Utilities Choose the PowerBack 50kVA Multi-Home
This is currently the largest transportable autotransformer available in the industry for multi-home restoration. It was developed to solve a common and costly problem: failed underground secondary cables serving apartment buildings, condos, and pedestal / hand-hole feeds.
- Fastest restoration method — Restore 120/240V to multiple customers in minutes, not hours.
- Eliminates unsafe practices — Removes the need to run temporary cables across properties.
- Improves crew efficiency — Significantly reduces the time and manpower required to restore service.
- Reduces overtime costs — Faster restoration means fewer extended outages and lower overtime budgets.
- Strong return on investment — Many utilities see ROI within 3 to 5 field deployments.
- Matches the box on site — Cam-Lok swap between a Flood-Seal whip (pedestal / hand-hole) and a tinned-end whip (cabinet bus or pad-mount spade).
Ideal Applications
- Failed underground secondary cable serving apartment buildings and condominiums
- Failed cable between pad-mount transformers and secondary pedestals / hand-holes
- Multi-home pedestals where one of three cables has failed
- Multi-meter cabinets with a bus bar and a legal landing point
- Situations requiring rapid restoration of power to multiple customers while permanent repairs are scheduled
How It Connects
Three 10-foot leads stay on the 400A breaker and end in Cam-Lok disconnects. The crew then twists on a 5-foot field whip to match the landing:
| What you see | Whip to use |
|---|---|
| Pedestal or hand-hole with a Homac / Flood-Seal bar | 5 ft Flood-Seal whip |
| Multi-meter cabinet bus, set-screw lug, or pad-mount secondary spade | 5 ft tinned-end whip |
Path: 400A breaker → 10 ft unit lead → Cam-Lok → 5 ft whip → utility secondary.
Breaker off to connect or remove. Confirm 120V hot-to-neutral and 240V hot-to-hot at a customer meter before leaving. Two of the three conductors on the service still have to be good.
PowerBack 50kVA vs Traditional Temporary Cable Methods
Running temporary cables across properties is slow, labor-intensive, and creates safety hazards. The PowerBack 50kVA Multi-Home offers a faster, safer solution by restoring power at the pedestal, pad-mount, or multi-meter cabinet — not by stringing jumpers and not through a single-home meter adapter — using a heavy-duty toroidal autotransformer on a rugged, all-weather wheeled cart.
