Marine-Puck is an isolation transformer hermetically epoxy encapsulated in a non-metallic flame-rated plastic enclosure. That means that it is double insulated and not referred to the ground in any way. Being non-metallic, the enclosure cannot be grounded, and besides is corrosion resistant to a higher degree than most stainless-steel alloys. Furthermore, the solid encapsulation prevents internal connections from shaking loose and shorting between one another or a metallic case.
MP Models highlights
- Eliminates the nuisance tripping of GFI (ground fault interrupt) systems when on shore power
- Protection against Galvanic corrosion by completely isolating the boat from the shore power
- Double 120V Primaries and Secondaries for maximum hookup connectivity and power configuration
- Frequency 50HZ/60HZ for domestic or international use
- Quiet hum compared to traditional transformers
- Small footprint and lighter weight than traditional transformers
- Manufactured in Shelton, CT USA
Overload Protection
Isolation transformers must be protected from overload by a dual pole disconnect ELCI circuit breaker installed between the shore cable entry point and the transformer primary side. The breaker rating must be equal to or less than the transformer continuous current rating, 30Amp for a 120V MP3.6, 25Amp for a 240V MP6, 50Amp for an MP6 configured for 120 V input and 50A for a set of Dual MP6 with 240V input. D-curve (delayed action) circuit breakers are recommended.
Inrush Surge
Marine-Pucks feature toroidal (ring shaped) isolation transformers which are lighter and more compact than traditional transformers. When turned on they may experience a brief Inrush Current surge, which may in a rare event cause the input circuit breaker to trip. An efficient remedy is selecting D-curve (delayed action) circuit breakers – Another solution is to mitigate the Inrush surge by pre-magnetizing the core briefly as the transformer is turned on.by means of an automatic Soft-Start unit. (optional).
Case Double Insulated from Boat Ground
Marine-Puck transformers are encapsulated inside a cup shaped plastic enclosure providing double insulation like that of most electric hand tools today. The ABS resin case combined with solid epoxy potting compound eliminates shock and fire hazards due to broken or loose conductors touching a metallic case, besides effectively preventing sea water ingress
